The following open-source operating system distributions use Open ZFS (listed alphabetically):
illumos based
- illumos was forked from the OpenSolaris codebase in 2010
- The illumos codebase is the foundation used by various distributions
- Similar to the relationship between the Linux kernel and Linux distros
- browse ZFS source code in opengrok or github
OmniOS
- general-purpose server OS
- download page; source code
- commercial support available from OmniTI
OpenIndiana
- general-purpose server OS
- download page; source code
FreeBSD based
- FreeBSD is a full general-purpose operating system. There are also several specialized distributions.
FreeBSD
- general-purpose server OS
- download page; brows ZFS source code in github or websvn
FreeNAS
- NAS appliance software
- commercial support available for sister product TrueNAS from ixSystems
PC-BSD
- Workstation / Desktop OS
- commercial support available from ixSystems
Debian GNU/kFreeBSD
- Debian variant with ~90% of the same software packages, based on GNU libc, but using the FreeBSD kernel which provides ZFS
- Installer supports creation of ZFS pools, installing to them, and booting directly from them with GRUB2
- We'd like to know how we're doing, and what major features are missing (DTrace comes to mind)
Linux based
- ZFS on Linux is implemented in the kernel, but is maintained in an independent code repository (not the mainline Linux kernel).
ZFS on Linux
- ZFS on Linux provides self-building packages for Debian, Fedora, RHEL/CentOS/SL, Ubuntu and build instructions for several other distributions
Gentoo
- Gentoo provides first-party ZFS on Linux packages to itself and its derivatives.
Apple OS X based
ZFS-OSX on GitHub
- Port of ZFSonLinux
- for use with Mac OS X 10.6 – OS X 10.9
- beta, developer preview – please only use on test pools
- when ZFS-OSX becomes stable it will become MacZFS
- occasional disk images at http://lundman.net/ftp/osx.zfs/
